Line-Haul Charge

The line-haul charge is the portion of a long-distance moving bill that covers the cost of physically transporting the shipment between origin and destination — usually calculated based on weight and distance.

On interstate moves billed by weight, the line-haul charge is the largest single line item. It is calculated by multiplying the shipment's net weight (in hundredweight) by a published mileage rate from the carrier's tariff. Accessorial charges — packing, stair carries, shuttles, storage — are added on top of line-haul to produce the final bill.

Boston Best Rate Movers bills long-distance moves by the hour rather than by weight, which is unusual in the industry: customers know what they're paying for in real time rather than waiting for a weight ticket to settle the final bill.
