Short Distance Movers in Boston, MA
Moving a few blocks, across the neighborhood, or to a nearby town? Short-distance moves in Greater Boston are our bread and butter. Boston Best Rate Movers handles same-neighborhood relocations every day — from one Allston apartment to another, from Brookline to Brighton, from Cambridge to Somerville, and everywhere in between. Short moves are faster, but they still need the same professionalism, equipment, and care as any other move.

Why Choose Us?

Short Distance Moves Done Right
Short moves have a reputation for being easy. Whether you're in the Somerville area, homes in South Boston, or South End, our Greater Boston community movers bring the same dedication to every job. They're not. You still need furniture wrapped and protected, floors and doorframes guarded, heavy items safely carried down (and up) stairs, and a truck loaded properly so nothing shifts. The only thing that's shorter is the drive between addresses.
Our crews bring the same full-service approach to a half-mile move as they do to a cross-state relocation: padded blankets on every piece of furniture, floor runners in both buildings, doorframe guards, and professional loading technique. The difference is that short-distance moves are usually faster because the drive between locations takes minutes, not hours.
We dispatch from two locations in Waltham and Brighton, which means we're already close to most short-distance moves in the metro area. Less drive time to your address means we start working sooner and you pay less for transit time.

Common Short-Distance Move Routes in Boston
The most common short-distance moves we handle are within the same neighborhood or between adjacent neighborhoods:
Allston to Brighton (and vice versa): The most frequent short-distance route in Boston, especially around September 1st. Homeowners across the Waltham area, homes in Watertown, Wellesley, and West Roxbury rely on our experienced Greater Boston movers. Same parking challenges, same walkup buildings, but a truck ride of under 10 minutes.
Back Bay to South End: Often just a few blocks apart. Brownstone-to-brownstone moves with narrow stairs and tight doorways at both ends.
Cambridge to Somerville: Adjacent cities with similar housing stock. Different parking permit jurisdictions — we handle permits for both cities.
Brookline to Newton: Suburban transition moves. Brookline apartments to Newton single-family homes, or vice versa for downsizers.
Same building or complex: Moving from one unit to another within the same building. These are common in large complexes and require elevator coordination with building management.
We also handle moves within towns like Wellesley, Needham, Arlington, Winchester, and other suburbs where families are upgrading, downsizing, or relocating within their school district.

Short Distance Moving Rates
Short-distance moves start at $149 per hour for two movers and a truck. Because the drive between locations is minimal, the total cost is almost entirely labor time at the two addresses.
Typical short-distance move times: Studio or 1-bedroom: 2-3 hours ($298-$447). 2-bedroom apartment: 3-5 hours ($447-$745). 3-bedroom house: 5-8 hours ($745-$1,192). Moves within the same building or complex are often 2-4 hours since there's no truck drive at all.
We bill in 15-minute increments, so short drive times save you real money compared to longer-distance moves. See our full rate schedule or get a free short-distance estimate.
Can You Make Multiple Trips on a Short Move?
For short-distance moves, customers sometimes ask if we can make multiple truck trips instead of trying to fit everything in one load. The answer is yes — and sometimes it's the most efficient approach.
If your move is short enough (under 2 miles), multiple trips can work well when you have more items than fit in one truck but not enough to justify renting a second truck. The drive time between trips is just a few minutes, so the extra time cost is minimal compared to the alternative of hiring a second truck and crew.
However, for most short-distance moves, we recommend sizing the truck correctly to fit everything in one load. This is faster overall and keeps the process simple. We'll recommend the right approach based on your inventory and the distance between addresses.

Short-Distance Move Tips
Secure parking at both addresses. Even though the move is short, you still need the truck close to both entrances. Apply for parking permits in advance, especially in congested neighborhoods like Allston, Brookline, and Cambridge.
Don't assume it's a DIY job. A short distance doesn't mean an easy move. If you're in a third-floor walkup with heavy furniture, the distance between addresses is irrelevant — the challenge is the stairs. Professional movers with the right equipment make the difference.
Consider timing. Short moves are fast, which means you might be able to book a mid-week or afternoon slot that's easier to schedule and often has more availability than peak weekend times.
Coordinate building access at both locations. If you're in a large building, make sure elevator reservations, freight elevator access, and move-in/move-out rules are confirmed at both addresses.

Packing Tips
How to Choose the Right Moving Box Sizes
Selecting the proper box size is essential for safe transport and efficient loading. Using incorrect box sizes can lead to structural failure, overloading, or inefficient stacking inside the truck.
Small Boxes (1.5 cu. ft.) – Heavy Items
Small cartons are ideal for dense items such as books, documents, canned goods, and small tools. Limiting weight per carton improves safety during lifting and prevents box collapse.
Medium Boxes (3.0 cu. ft.) – General Household Items
Medium cartons are commonly used for kitchenware, décor, small appliances, and miscellaneous household goods. They provide balanced capacity without becoming too heavy.
Large Boxes (5–6 cu. ft.) – Lightweight Bulk Items
Large cartons are best suited for bedding, pillows, clothing, and other lightweight but bulky belongings. These cartons should not be overloaded with dense items.
