Appliance Movers in Boston, MA
Appliances are some of the heaviest and most awkward items in any home. A standard refrigerator weighs 250-350 pounds. A washer-dryer set can weigh 300-400 pounds combined. Moving them through Boston's narrow doorways and down tight staircases without damaging the appliance, the floors, or the walls requires equipment and technique that most people don't have. Boston Best Rate Movers has been safely moving appliances across Greater Boston since 2002.

Why Choose Us?

Safe Appliance Moving by Trained Boston Crews
Appliance moving isn't just about strength — it's about knowing how each appliance needs to be prepared, transported, and installed. Homeowners across Reading, the Roslindale area, homes in Roxbury, and Somerville trust our specialty team throughout Greater Boston. Refrigerators need to be defrosted before moving and kept upright during transport to protect the compressor. Washers need the drum secured to prevent internal damage. Gas dryers need to be properly disconnected (we don't handle gas disconnection — you'll need a plumber or your gas company for that, but we handle everything else).
Our crews carry appliance-specific equipment: heavy-duty appliance dollies with rubber wheels that won't mark floors, ratchet straps rated for 500+ pounds, and stair-climbing attachments for walkup buildings. We lay floor runners from the appliance to the truck at both locations to protect hardwood, tile, and vinyl flooring from scratches and scuff marks.
We move appliances as standalone jobs (just the appliance) or as part of a larger move. If you're doing a full home or apartment move and need appliances included, just tell us when you book and we'll bring the right equipment.

Appliances We Move in Boston
Refrigerators and freezers: Standard top-freezer, bottom-freezer, side-by-side, and French door models. From South Boston to the Wakefield area and homes in Waltham to Watertown, our trained Greater Boston specialists handle every item with precision. Also chest freezers and commercial-size units. We keep refrigerators upright during the entire move and advise you on the recommended wait time before plugging in at the new location.
Washers and dryers: Top-load, front-load, and stacked units. Front-load washers are especially heavy and require drum stabilization before transport. Stacked units need to be separated before moving in most cases.
Stoves and ranges: Gas and electric. We disconnect and reconnect electric ranges. Gas ranges require a licensed plumber for disconnection and reconnection — we coordinate with your plumber's schedule so everything lines up on move day.
Dishwashers: Built-in dishwashers need to be disconnected from water supply and drainage before removal. We handle the physical removal and reinstallation positioning; plumbing connections should be handled by a plumber.
Other appliances: Wine coolers, standalone ice makers, window AC units, dehumidifiers, and any other large household appliance. If it's heavy and needs to go from one address to another, we move it.

Appliance Moving Rates in Boston
Appliance moving starts at $149 per hour for two movers and a truck, which includes appliance dollies, floor protection, and all strapping and padding equipment.
Most single-appliance moves (one fridge, one washer-dryer set) take 1.5-2.5 hours including travel time between locations. Moving multiple appliances as part of a larger move adds 30-60 minutes per appliance to the overall move time.
We don't charge extra for heavy items, stair carries, or appliance-specific equipment. If your washing machine needs to go up three flights of stairs in a Brighton walkup, it's still $149/hr — no surcharges.

Appliance Moving Challenges in Boston Buildings
Appliance moves in Boston come with challenges that don't exist in newer housing markets:
Basement laundry rooms. Many Boston homes have washers and dryers in the basement, accessed by steep, narrow stairs with low ceilings. Our crews use stair-climbing dollies and controlled descent techniques to get heavy appliances up and down safely.
Third-floor walkups. Moving a 300-pound refrigerator up three flights of narrow stairs requires careful planning, the right equipment, and experienced movers. We assess staircase dimensions before move day so there are no surprises.
Narrow doorways and tight kitchens. Older Boston apartments often have kitchen doorways that are barely wider than a standard refrigerator. We measure in advance and sometimes need to remove doors from hinges to create enough clearance.
No loading dock access. Most residential buildings in Boston don't have loading docks. Our crews manage the exterior carry from the truck to the building entrance, including navigating front steps, porches, and uneven walkways.
Licensed and insured: MDPU #31391, USDOT #1718049. Full cargo insurance covers your appliances during transport. 797+ five-star reviews.

Preparing Your Appliances for Moving Day
Defrost your refrigerator 24 hours before the move. Unplug it, leave the doors open, and place towels on the floor to absorb water. A defrosted fridge is lighter, won't leak in the truck, and is less likely to develop mold during transport.
Empty and clean all appliances. Remove all food, shelves (wrap glass shelves separately), and loose components. Clean interiors to prevent odors during transport.
Secure washer drums. Front-load washers have shipping bolts that stabilize the drum. If you still have them, reinstall them before the move. If not, tell us and we'll secure the drum with padding and straps.
Arrange utility disconnection in advance. Gas appliances need a licensed plumber or your gas company to disconnect them before we arrive. Electric appliances should be unplugged at least a few hours before the move.
Measure your new space. Confirm that the appliance fits through the doorways and into the designated spot at the new location. The last thing you want on move day is to discover your new kitchen doorway is an inch too narrow for the fridge.

Packing Tips
How to Choose the Right Moving Box Sizes
Selecting the proper box size is essential for safe transport and efficient loading. Using incorrect box sizes can lead to structural failure, overloading, or inefficient stacking inside the truck.
Small Boxes (1.5 cu. ft.) – Heavy Items
Small cartons are ideal for dense items such as books, documents, canned goods, and small tools. Limiting weight per carton improves safety during lifting and prevents box collapse.
Medium Boxes (3.0 cu. ft.) – General Household Items
Medium cartons are commonly used for kitchenware, décor, small appliances, and miscellaneous household goods. They provide balanced capacity without becoming too heavy.
Large Boxes (5–6 cu. ft.) – Lightweight Bulk Items
Large cartons are best suited for bedding, pillows, clothing, and other lightweight but bulky belongings. These cartons should not be overloaded with dense items.
