Small Movers in Boston, MA
Not every move requires a massive crew and a 26-foot truck. For studios, one-bedroom apartments, and small loads, Boston Best Rate Movers sends a right-sized team that gets the job done quickly without the overhead of a larger crew. Small moves are some of our most common jobs — we handle them every day across Greater Boston with the same care and professionalism as our biggest relocations.

Why Choose Us?

Right-Sized Crews for Small Moves
Small moves — studios, one-bedrooms, single rooms, and partial-apartment moves — make up a significant portion of the moves we handle in Boston. Whether you're in Newton, North End, or the Norwood area, our Greater Boston area movers bring the same dedication to every job. The city's housing stock is dominated by small apartments in walkup buildings, and our two-person crews are perfectly equipped for these jobs.
A typical small move involves a bed frame and mattress, a dresser or two, a desk, a few boxes of clothing and personal items, and maybe a sofa and TV. This fits comfortably in one truck and takes 2-4 hours with a two-mover crew. Our crews bring the same equipment as any other move: furniture pads, floor runners, doorframe guards, dollies, and straps.
We don't have a minimum item count. If you need to move a bed and five boxes across town, we'll do it. If you need one room moved out of a shared apartment while your roommates stay, we'll do that too. Whatever the size, we treat it as a full-service move with proper protection and care.

What Counts as a Small Move?
Studio apartment: Typically a bed, dresser, desk, a few boxes, and maybe a small sofa. Homeowners across Reading, Roslindale, the Roxbury area, and homes in Somerville rely on our experienced Greater Boston community movers. Two movers, 2-3 hours, one truck.
One-bedroom apartment: Full bedroom set, living room furniture, kitchen items, and personal boxes. Two movers, 3-4 hours, one truck.
Single room in a shared apartment: Just your bedroom and personal items. Two movers, 1.5-2.5 hours, one truck.
Partial loads: A few pieces of furniture, a small number of boxes, or specific items that need professional handling. Two movers, 1-3 hours depending on scope.
For anything larger than a fully furnished two-bedroom, we typically recommend a three-mover crew to keep the job efficient. See our apartment moving services for more details on larger apartments.

Small Move Rates in Boston
Small moves start at $149 per hour for two movers and a truck. With the compact inventory of a small move, most jobs fall on the shorter end of our time range.

We bill in 15-minute increments after the first hour, so you're not paying for time you don't use. No stair fees, no fuel surcharges, no equipment charges. The rate includes everything: truck, equipment, furniture wrapping, disassembly/reassembly, and floor protection.
Why Hire Movers for a Small Move?
It's tempting to think a small move doesn't need professionals. But there are good reasons to hire movers even for a studio:
Boston walkups. Carrying a mattress down three flights of a narrow staircase by yourself is dangerous. Carrying a dresser down the same stairs is worse. Our crews have the technique and equipment to do it safely and without damaging the building.
Parking logistics. Even a small move needs a truck parked near the entrance. In Boston neighborhoods, that means permits, strategy, and often double-parking management. We handle this daily.
Time savings. A small move you'd spend a full day struggling through takes our crew 2-3 hours. You save your back, your Saturday, and your sanity.
No damage. Friends helping you move means scuffed walls, scratched floors, and a sofa stuck in the stairwell. Our crews protect the building and your belongings with the same standards we apply to every move.

Tips for a Quick Small Move
Be fully packed before the crew arrives. Small moves should be fast. If you're still packing when the movers show up, you're paying for time you could have saved. Have every box sealed, labeled, and ready to go.
Disassemble what you can. If you can take apart your bed frame and desk before we arrive, the crew can start loading immediately. Every minute of prep you do beforehand saves money.
Secure parking at both locations. The biggest time-waster on small moves is parking. Have a spot reserved near the entrance at both the origin and destination. In Boston, this may mean a moving permit or asking a neighbor to hold a space.
Label boxes by room. Even on a small move, labeled boxes mean faster unloading. "Kitchen," "Bedroom," "Bathroom" — simple labels save the crew from asking where every box goes.

Packing Tips
How to Choose the Right Moving Box Sizes
Selecting the proper box size is essential for safe transport and efficient loading. Using incorrect box sizes can lead to structural failure, overloading, or inefficient stacking inside the truck.
Small Boxes (1.5 cu. ft.) – Heavy Items
Small cartons are ideal for dense items such as books, documents, canned goods, and small tools. Limiting weight per carton improves safety during lifting and prevents box collapse.
Medium Boxes (3.0 cu. ft.) – General Household Items
Medium cartons are commonly used for kitchenware, décor, small appliances, and miscellaneous household goods. They provide balanced capacity without becoming too heavy.
Large Boxes (5–6 cu. ft.) – Lightweight Bulk Items
Large cartons are best suited for bedding, pillows, clothing, and other lightweight but bulky belongings. These cartons should not be overloaded with dense items.
