Student Movers in Boston, MA
Boston is the ultimate college town — over 35 universities and 250,000 students packed into a city where most off-campus housing comes with narrow staircases, no parking, and leases that all start on September 1st. Boston Best Rate Movers has been helping students move in, move out, and move between apartments across Greater Boston since 2002. We know the campus neighborhoods, the building quirks, and the logistics that make student moves in Boston uniquely challenging.

Why Choose Us?

Affordable Student Moving Across Every Boston Campus
Student moves are typically smaller in scale but come with their own set of challenges: tight budgets, third-floor walkups, parking nightmares in campus neighborhoods, and move-out deadlines that don't flex. Families across South Boston, the South End area, and homes in Wakefield count on our professional Greater Boston team for stress-free moves. Our crews handle student moves every day in the neighborhoods surrounding Boston's major universities:
Boston University (BU): Allston, Brighton, Brookline along Comm Ave. Dense student housing, heavy September 1st turnover, and streets that become nearly impassable during move-in week.
Boston College (BC): Brighton, Chestnut Hill, Cleveland Circle. Older apartment buildings with steep stairs and limited parking. Many units are third-floor walkups with furniture that has to go through windows.
Northeastern University: Fenway, Mission Hill, Roxbury. Tight one-way streets, limited loading zones, and high-rise apartments with strict elevator schedules.
Harvard and MIT: Cambridge, Somerville. Different parking permit rules than Boston. Dense housing stock near Harvard Square and Kendall Square with mixed building types from historic houses to modern high-rises.
Emerson, Berklee, Suffolk, Simmons, Wentworth, MassArt: Downtown, Back Bay, Fenway, Mission Hill. Each campus area has its own parking and access challenges.

What a Student Move Looks Like With Our Team
Most student moves involve a studio or one-bedroom apartment (or a room within a shared apartment). Clients in Watertown, the Wellesley area, and homes in West Roxbury trust our Greater Boston area team for efficient, damage-free relocations. Typical inventory includes a bed frame and mattress, desk, dresser, bookshelf, a few boxes of clothes and books, and maybe a couch or TV. This usually fits in one truck with a two-person crew and takes 2-4 hours.
If you're moving with roommates and splitting a larger apartment, we can coordinate the entire move at once — loading everyone's items, delivering to multiple destinations if needed, and keeping the process organized so nothing gets mixed up between roommates.
For move-outs where you're heading home for the summer or storing items between leases, we also offer moving and storage services. We pick up your belongings, transport them to our secure storage facility, and redeliver them when your new lease starts — all with one crew and one truck.
We work with students' schedules. If you have a noon checkout deadline or need to be out before a certain time, tell us when you book and we'll build the timeline around your constraint.

Student Moving Rates in Boston
Student moves start at $149 per hour for two movers and a truck. With smaller inventories, most student moves fall on the shorter end of our time range:
Single room or studio: 2-3 hours with 2 movers ($298-$447). One-bedroom apartment: 3-4 hours with 2 movers ($447-$596). Shared apartment (full unit, multiple roommates): 4-6 hours with 2-3 movers ($596-$894).
We don't charge stair fees — whether you're on the first floor or the fifth, the rate stays at $149/hr. No fuel surcharges, no equipment fees, no hidden charges. For students on a budget, this transparency matters. You'll know your maximum cost before the crew arrives.
If you're moving items to storage between leases, storage rates are separate from the moving charge. Learn about our storage options or request a combined moving + storage quote.
September 1st and Student Moving Season
The vast majority of student moves in Boston happen in a compressed window: late August through early September, with September 1st as the peak. This is the busiest moving day in America, and it happens right here in Boston because nearly every off-campus lease starts and ends on the same date.
We've navigated every September 1st since 2002. Here's what students need to know:
Book by June. Our September 1st calendar fills up fast. If you wait until August to call, we may not have availability. The earlier you book, the better your chances of getting your preferred time slot.
Apply for parking permits immediately. In Boston, you need a moving truck permit from the city. On September 1st, these are in extreme demand. Apply through boston.gov the moment you have your new address confirmed. In Cambridge and Somerville, apply through those cities' parking departments.
Consider August 31st or September 2nd. If you have any lease flexibility, moving the day before or after September 1st can cut your move time in half. Traffic, parking competition, and elevator wait times are dramatically lower on adjacent dates. Learn more about September 1st moving.

Student Moving Tips From Our Boston Crews
Declutter before you pack. Students accumulate more than they realize over a school year. Textbooks you'll never open again, worn-out furniture from Craigslist, kitchen items from three roommates that no one wants. Donate or discard before the movers arrive — it saves time and money.
Pack efficiently. Use suitcases and duffle bags for clothes instead of boxes. Use towels and linens as padding for fragile items. Label every box with your name (especially important in shared apartments) and the room it's going to at the destination.
Coordinate with roommates. If you're splitting a moving crew, make sure everyone knows the schedule. Movers can't wait around for someone who overslept. Have everyone packed and ready to go at the scheduled start time.
Know your checkout rules. Many Boston apartments require a walkthrough with the landlord, return of keys, and a broom-clean condition. Find out your building's requirements in advance so you're not scrambling after the movers leave.
Take photos of your apartment. Before move-in and after move-out, photograph the condition of walls, floors, and fixtures. This protects your security deposit and gives you documentation if your landlord disputes any damage.

Packing Tips
How to Choose the Right Moving Box Sizes
Selecting the proper box size is essential for safe transport and efficient loading. Using incorrect box sizes can lead to structural failure, overloading, or inefficient stacking inside the truck.
Small Boxes (1.5 cu. ft.) – Heavy Items
Small cartons are ideal for dense items such as books, documents, canned goods, and small tools. Limiting weight per carton improves safety during lifting and prevents box collapse.
Medium Boxes (3.0 cu. ft.) – General Household Items
Medium cartons are commonly used for kitchenware, décor, small appliances, and miscellaneous household goods. They provide balanced capacity without becoming too heavy.
Large Boxes (5–6 cu. ft.) – Lightweight Bulk Items
Large cartons are best suited for bedding, pillows, clothing, and other lightweight but bulky belongings. These cartons should not be overloaded with dense items.
