Boston Moving Permit (No Parking Permit)
A Boston moving permit is a temporary No Parking permit issued by the City of Boston's Transportation Department that reserves a curbside parking space for a moving truck on a specific date — typically costing $60 to $120.
Most Boston neighborhoods require a moving permit to legally park a moving truck at the curb. The permit is applied for online through the Transportation Department, costs $60 to $120 depending on neighborhood and time of year, and requires that No Parking signs be posted at the curb at least 48 hours before move day. Without a permit, the moving truck may be ticketed, towed, or unable to find any legal parking — and any extra time the crew spends double-parking or shuffling is billed to the customer.
Cambridge, Somerville, Brookline, Newton, and Waltham all have their own equivalent permit processes through their own transportation departments. Boston Best Rate Movers can apply for permits on the customer's behalf and post the signs as part of pre-move coordination — see our Moving Permits Boston guide for details.

September 1st (Boston Moving Day)
September 1st is Boston's single busiest moving day of the year — roughly 70% of Boston rental leases turn over on that date, creating citywide traffic, parking, and crew-availability strain.
Long Carry
A long carry is the additional charge most movers add when the truck cannot be parked close to the entrance and crews must walk an extended distance to load or unload.
