Fragile & Specialty Packing in Boston, MA
Some items need more than a standard box and packing paper. Fine china, crystal stemware, original artwork, framed mirrors, antiques, and electronics require specialty packing techniques and materials to survive a move. Boston Best Rate Movers provides fragile and specialty packing for items that need extra care — whether as part of a full-home pack or as a standalone service for your most valuable belongings.

Why Choose Us?

Specialty Packing for High-Value and Fragile Items
Our fragile packing service uses techniques and materials beyond standard moving boxes. From homes in Weymouth to Winchester, our Greater Boston area packing specialists protect every item with care. Glassware and stemware are individually wrapped in packing paper and cushioned with bubble wrap inside cell-divided boxes that prevent pieces from touching. Dishes are packed vertically (like records, not stacked flat) in reinforced dish packs with multiple layers of cushioning.
Artwork and framed items get corner protectors, bubble wrap, and either flat-pack picture boxes or custom mirror/art boxes depending on size. Large or valuable pieces may be wrapped in moving blankets and secured to the truck wall rather than stacked in the load.
Antique furniture receives extra padding at corners, legs, and any protruding hardware. Drawers are emptied and wrapped separately. Glass-front cabinets have their glass surfaces protected with tape grids and bubble wrap before the piece is blanket-wrapped.

Items That Need Specialty Packing
China and crystal: Each piece individually wrapped, packed in cell-divided dish boxes with crumpled paper cushioning top and bottom. Clients in homes in Cambridge and Hyde Park appreciate our Greater Boston area team's attention to detail during packing. No piece touches another piece.
Artwork and paintings: Corner protectors, glassine paper for canvas, bubble wrap, picture boxes. Oil paintings need special handling to avoid surface damage.
Mirrors and glass tabletops: Tape grid across the glass surface (prevents shattering into small pieces if cracked during transit), corner protectors, bubble wrap, mirror box.
Antiques: Custom wrapping based on the piece. Antique wood furniture may need furniture pads secured with stretch wrap rather than tape (which can damage finishes).
Electronics: Flat-screen TVs, monitors, and computers packed in original boxes when available, or in custom-fit boxes with foam padding. Cables labeled and bagged separately.
Wine collections: Cell-divided wine boxes hold bottles upright and prevent contact. Temperature-sensitive logistics discussed if the move involves summer heat or extended transit.

Fragile Packing Rates
Fragile and specialty packing is billed at $149 per hour plus specialty materials. Because fragile packing takes more time per item than standard packing, it's useful to know typical timeframes:
Kitchen china/glassware set (service for 12): 1-2 hours. Artwork collection (10-15 pieces): 1-2 hours. Full china cabinet contents: 2-3 hours. Whole-home fragile items only: 2-5 hours depending on volume.
Specialty materials (dish packs, picture boxes, mirror boxes, custom crating) are charged at cost. We estimate material costs during the quote.
Custom Crating for Oversized or Extremely Valuable Items
For items that can't be safely packed in standard boxes — large sculptures, oversized paintings, marble tabletops, grandfather clocks — we provide custom wooden crating. A crate is built to the exact dimensions of the item, with internal bracing and cushioning designed for that specific piece.
Custom crating is priced per item based on dimensions and complexity. It's typically used for items valued over $1,000 or items with unusual shapes that don't fit standard packing materials. If you have items that might need crating, mention them when requesting your estimate so we can assess and include the crating cost.

Preparing Fragile Items for Packing Day
Inventory your fragile items. Walk through your home and note everything that needs specialty attention: china cabinets, display cases, wall art, electronics, antique furniture. Share this inventory when booking so we bring the right materials.
Remove items from display cases and china cabinets. If items are behind glass, consider removing them from the cabinet before we arrive so we can focus on wrapping rather than extraction.
Note anything with existing damage. If a piece already has a chip, crack, or repair, point it out so we can document it before packing. This protects both you and us during any claims process.
Provide special instructions. If certain pieces need to stay upright, can't be tilted, or have specific handling requirements, tell us before packing starts.

Packing Tips
How to Choose the Right Moving Box Sizes
Selecting the proper box size is essential for safe transport and efficient loading. Using incorrect box sizes can lead to structural failure, overloading, or inefficient stacking inside the truck.
Small Boxes (1.5 cu. ft.) – Heavy Items
Small cartons are ideal for dense items such as books, documents, canned goods, and small tools. Limiting weight per carton improves safety during lifting and prevents box collapse.
Medium Boxes (3.0 cu. ft.) – General Household Items
Medium cartons are commonly used for kitchenware, décor, small appliances, and miscellaneous household goods. They provide balanced capacity without becoming too heavy.
Large Boxes (5–6 cu. ft.) – Lightweight Bulk Items
Large cartons are best suited for bedding, pillows, clothing, and other lightweight but bulky belongings. These cartons should not be overloaded with dense items.
