MDPU Number
An MDPU number is a state license issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities authorizing a moving company to perform household-goods moves within Massachusetts.
Federal USDOT/MC licensing covers interstate moves, but moves that stay entirely within Massachusetts state lines are regulated separately by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (MDPU). To legally perform a local Boston, Cambridge, or Somerville move — anything that begins and ends inside Massachusetts — a moving company must hold an active MDPU number. Companies operating without an MDPU number on intrastate moves are not licensed under Massachusetts law and can be reported to the DPU.
The MDPU sets rate filings, insurance minimums, and consumer-protection rules specific to Massachusetts movers. Customers can verify a moving company's MDPU status by contacting the Massachusetts DPU directly.
Boston Best Rate Movers holds MDPU #31391 for intrastate Massachusetts moves.
