The single most important packing rule: items inside a box must not move when you shake it. Empty space in a box = damage opportunity. Fill all gaps with packing paper, bubble wrap, or soft items (towels, linens). Heavy items go on the bottom; lighter items go on top. Boxes should be sealed flat on top, not bulging upward — bulging boxes collapse when stacked. Label every box on at least two sides (not just the top — once stacked, the top is invisible) with destination room and a brief content note.
Top mistakes to avoid: overfilling boxes (anything over 50 lb is too heavy for one person to carry safely); using cheap tape (fails under load — use high-tack moving tape, not standard packing tape); packing dishes flat (they crack during transit — always pack dishes vertically like records in a crate); skipping the dish-pack box (regular boxes don't have the corrugation thickness to protect dishes); leaving liquids in boxes (use plastic bags or move them in coolers); packing the day-of (always underestimated — start at least a week before move-day, ideally two weeks); skipping labeling (un-labeled boxes get dumped in the garage for months); and DIY-packing fragile items you cannot afford to lose (those items are NOT covered by our insurance — only items we pack are).

The single most common mistake we see is using boxes that are too large for heavy items. A large box stuffed with books is nearly impossible to lift, puts strain on the box bottom, and frequently results in the box giving out during transport.
Heavy items like books, records, canned goods, tools, and small appliances should always go in small boxes.
Medium boxes are ideal for kitchen items, toys, shoes, and general household goods. Large boxes should be reserved for lightweight bulky items like pillows, linens, lampshades, and stuffed animals.
Wardrobe boxes should be used for hanging clothes to avoid wrinkles and folding damage. Packing technique matters as much as box selection.
Every box should be lined with crumpled packing paper at the bottom for cushioning before any items go in. Dishes should be wrapped individually in packing paper and packed vertically on edge, not stacked flat.
Glassware should be wrapped with extra paper stuffed inside the glass and placed upright in cell dividers. Picture frames should be wrapped in corner protectors and packed vertically.
Electronics should be wrapped in anti-static materials, not newspaper, which leaves ink residue. Labeling is where most DIY packers cut corners, and it costs them hours of frustration during unpacking.
Every box should be labeled on the top and at least one side with the room it belongs to and a brief description of its contents.
Fragile boxes should be marked clearly on all sides. Boxes containing items you will need immediately should be marked as essentials and loaded last so they come off the truck first.
