How to Choose a Moving Company: 10 Questions to Ask

Choosing a moving company is a trust decision disguised as a price decision: you're handing strangers everything you own, and the industry contains both 24-year professionals and a van with a Craigslist ad. The good news — the difference is checkable in about twenty minutes. Step 1: Verify the Licenses (Five Minutes, Eliminates Half the Field)

  • USDOT number: every legitimate interstate mover has one, searchable at the FMCSA's mover-search site, which shows complaint history and insurance status. Ours is #1718049 — published on every page of our site, which is itself the tell: real companies display their numbers, sketchy ones make you ask.
  • MDPU number: Massachusetts requires its own license for intrastate moves (ours: #31391). A "mover" with neither number is an unregulated truck — if something breaks or disappears, you have no process, only an argument.
  • Insurance: ask for proof of liability and workers' comp. If a mover is hurt on your property and the company carries no comp, that risk can land on you.

Step 2: Read Reviews Like an Investigator

Volume and pattern beat star average. The method: read the three-star reviews first (the most honest tier — too annoyed to flatter, too fair to rage), check how the company answers criticism (a defensive owner in the replies is a preview of your dispute), look for named crews and specifics ("Alex's team wrapped every door frame") versus vague praise, and confirm recency — 50 great reviews from 2019 describe a different company than steady reviews this month. Scale matters too: 817+ Google reviews at 4.7 can't be faked economically; 12 perfect reviews can. Cross-check at least two platforms (Google + Yelp or BBB) — single-platform perfection is a pattern of its own.

Step 3: Get Three Quotes — and Compare Them Correctly

Get three written quotes for the identical job description (same inventory, same addresses, same date — include the walk-up floors and the piano). Then compare structures, not headline rates:

  • What's the rate, and what does it include? Padding, wrap, equipment, assembly — included with us; line-itemed by the lowballers.
  • How is travel billed? Once, in writing, up front — or "we'll see."

  • What's the estimate type? Non-binding, binding, or transparent hourly — they fail differently; know which one you're signing.
  • The middle-quote rule: when one quote is dramatically cheaper, that's not a deal — that's the company that makes it up later. Suspiciously cheap is the most expensive kind of mover.

Step 4: The Ten Questions That Sort Everyone

Email these and keep the replies: (1) Are you licensed — USDOT and MDPU numbers? (2) Are your movers employees or day labor? The Red Flags That End the Conversation

  • A large cash deposit to "hold the date" — reputable movers don't hold your money hostage before the work.
  • Phone-only quotes with no inventory questions — a quote that didn't ask about your home is a number designed to change.
  • No physical address, a name that almost matches a famous company, trucks with no branding, or a website with no license numbers.
  • "We're available!" for the date everyone else booked out weeks ago, in season.
  • Pressure tactics — "this rate expires today." Real capacity doesn't expire at midnight.
