Moving in the Heat: How Our Crews Stay Safe and Efficient

Boston Summers Are No Joke

Boston's summer heat is deceptive. While the city does not reach the triple-digit temperatures common in the South or Southwest, the combination of high humidity, heat island effects from dense urban development, and the physical demands of moving furniture up and down stairs creates genuinely dangerous working conditions. July and August regularly see stretches of 90-plus degree days with humidity levels that push the heat index well above 100 degrees. For moving crews hauling heavy furniture and boxes for hours at a time, heat safety is not optional — it is essential.

Our Heat Safety Protocols

At Boston Best Rate Movers, crew safety drives every decision during summer moves. Our heat safety protocols are built on years of experience working through New England summers and are designed to keep our team performing at their best even on the hottest days.

  • Mandatory hydration breaks — crews take scheduled water breaks every 30 to 45 minutes during moves above 85 degrees. We supply electrolyte drinks in addition to water to prevent dehydration and heat exhaustion
  • Early morning starts — during heat waves, we offer 7 AM start times to maximize the cooler morning hours. The bulk of heavy lifting happens before the afternoon peak
  • Crew rotation — on larger moves during extreme heat, we rotate crew members between truck loading and interior work to prevent any single person from spending too long in direct sun
  • Heat illness training — every crew member is trained to recognize the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke in themselves and their teammates. If a crew member shows symptoms, work stops immediately

Protecting Heat-Sensitive Items

Your belongings are also vulnerable to extreme heat. The inside of a moving truck parked in the sun can reach 140 degrees or higher within an hour. Items that are particularly at risk during summer moves include:

  • Candles and wax items — these will melt and deform in a hot truck. Pack them in insulated containers or move them in your air-conditioned car
  • Vinyl records — heat warps vinyl permanently. Transport your collection in your personal vehicle with the AC running
  • Electronics — laptops, tablets, and gaming consoles can suffer battery damage and screen issues in extreme heat. We wrap electronics in moving blankets and load them last so they spend minimal time in the truck
  • Chocolate, cosmetics, and medications — anything that melts or degrades in heat should travel with you, not in the truck
  • Wooden instruments — guitars, violins, and pianos are sensitive to heat and humidity changes. Professional wrapping and climate awareness are critical

Boston's Humidity Challenge

It is not just the heat — Boston's coastal humidity makes summer moves uniquely challenging. High humidity causes cardboard boxes to soften and weaken, tape adhesion to fail, and wrapped items to trap moisture. Our crews use reinforced packing materials during humid conditions and take extra care with items wrapped in plastic to prevent moisture damage. We also monitor weather forecasts closely to anticipate humidity spikes and adjust our packing approach accordingly.

What You Can Do to Help

You can support your moving crew and protect your belongings by keeping your home air-conditioned until the crew finishes loading, providing a shaded area and cold water at both locations, and identifying any heat-sensitive items in advance so the crew can plan their loading order. If your same-day move falls during a heat advisory, communicate with your moving company about adjusted timelines and expectations.
